Jake Bugg - September 2013, Vancouver

My wife and I secured two tickets to go see Jake Bugg live in Vancouver, BC this September! Of all people, I was introduced to Jake Bugg's music by my stepdad Paul. He's got a pretty good ear for music, and he knows me well enough to know what I'd get a kick out of too. To a lot of people it might sound like something a guy like me wouldn't listen to on purpose, but I think I have a bit larger of a palate than one might expect.

Jake's music draws influence from quite literally all over the place. The accoustic guitar he plays is a delta blues style, much like one that Robert L. Johnson used to play. He has stated musicians from the obvious Johnny Cash, Beatles and Everly Brothers to Jimi Hendrix and even Layne Staley of Alice In Chains. Even at such a young age I find his voice to already have that haunting, lasting quality, and it will be interesting to see how his sound evolves over the course of his career. Our tickets were only $15 each, which is insane to me. The self-titled release debuted at number one on the UK charts and is certified platinum. It was released in October 2012 in the UK, taking another 6 months to be released in the US on April 9 2013. The point I'm getting at is that there is no way tickets will ever be this cheap again. The venue, called "Venue" is on Granville street, and only holds 600 people. It is primarily a nightclub, so I imagine the sound system in there is pretty ridiculous.

If you've never heard or even heard of Jake Bugg before, and if you're into the folk/country/rock/blues sort of sound, I advise you to give the self titled debut a listen. Most of the album is farily mellow, but not in a way that makes it lame or weak. My wife and I both dig it, and we're pretty stoked to be going to see the show this September.
