Vancouver Island, The Province? (Again, Sort Of)

This was in the local papers here today. This is interesting to me not only because I live here and it directly effects me, but also because Vancouver Island (including the surrounding gulf islands) was a colony from 1848 up until 1866 when it then became part of British Columbia. It's cool that this is becoming a "real thing" because it's often been a fun topic of conversation between my wife and I, even at times with our friends as well. A lot of really positive changes would occur both for the island and for the country as a whole.

Anyhow, I'll let the article do the talking. Something to think about indeed!

Eagles Everywhere!

My wife and I were driving to the grocery store downtown, and we pulled over when we just happened to look to our right and saw a whole bunch of eagles on the beach. It appears they were attempting to negotiate nesting rights from some fish lying at the shoreline. It feels pretty cool when you just happen to be at the right place at the right time, and you also happen to have your camera.

May Long Weekend 2013

Here on the north side of the 49th parallel, it's a holiday long weekend (falling on the 18th, 19th and 20th this year) known to Canadians as Victoria Day, in celebration of Queen Victoria. It is commonly known as "May 2-4" in reference to both the date, celebrated on the last Monday before May 25, and also the fact that a case of beer consists of 24 bottles/cans - no shit.

My wife and I are going camping (at a spot I will leave unnamed), along with 10-20 friends of ours and their childrens. This is the first time we've had a chance to go camping since the summer before last, and you cannot begin to imagine how excited we both are. We ventured up on the 17th to set up our tent and hang out with our friends who've already been there for the past two nights, and since it was such a nice day out I thought I'd take some pictures.

I am hoping to get at least one case down over the course of the weekend, but I think I'll have to bring extra just in case - better to have too many than not enough, I always say. Time to get dumb and be at one with nature!

Vancouver Island, Beyond Victoria

I stumbled across this blog sort of by accident this morning, but they got me at just the title, those bastards!! I, as I'm sure many other fellow islanders, can't help but get a funny warm feeling inside as I read those words, because to many outsiders the island is Victoria and that's it. Not that Victoria isn't a nice place and a great city, but in the grand scheme of things it is a very very small portion of this big ol' chunk of land, and with roughly half of the island's entire human population in or around just the one city should show perspective on the space and nature one might expect if they were to travel north. No shortage of cool shit to see and do around here, and this fun little blog helps to showcase that!

Our Tofino and Ucluelet Honeymoon

So as I was saying, I just got married on April 20th - pun intended and on the 22nd we went down island for our honeymoon. We stayed in Ucluelet but we spent a lot of time in Tofino. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Vancouver Island, Tofino KICKS ASS. This is one of the furthest western points in Canada; next stop China. These are the best beaches on the entire island.. bigtime surfing town with a shit ton of culture and huge fucking trees everywhere. We did so much cool shit while we were there, but here's a couple things I really want to tell you about:

LONG BEACH RADIO is an amazing radio station. For the most part, I can't stand the radio, but we tuned in to check the weather and it just stayed on the whole time. They broadcast online, and you should check it out.

TOFINO BREWING COMPANY is brand new, but god damn do they ever make a good beer!! Seriously. I had a glass of IPA at a restaurant called ‘Shelter' and then we drove straight to the brewery and I bought some blonde. Check them out too.

Get a big bag, get into your car, and go the fuck to Tofino!!!
